In April 2015, UK legislation regarding electrically assisted pedal cycles (EAPCs), electric bikes, or Pedelecs became very clear in coordination with EU law EN15194. These bicycles are defined as having pedals, with electric assistance ceasing when the speed exceeds 25 kilometers per hour (15.5 miles per hour), and the electric motor power does not exceed 250 watts. Bicycles meeting these requirements, including two-wheelers, tandems, and tricycles, can be ridden on any cycle lane and wherever bicycles are usually permitted.

In the UK, the age restriction for riding such bicycles is 14 years old, with no requirement for a license, registration, or vehicle tax. Although some off-road bikes may have speeds exceeding 15.5 miles per hour, according to UK law, these bicycles do not comply with EAPC road use regulations.

If your electric bike does not comply with regulations, such as exceeding 250 watts of motor power or providing assistance exceeding 15.5 miles per hour while riding, it must be considered as a motor vehicle and registered, insured, and taxed. Additionally, you will need to hold a driving license, and you must wear a motorcycle helmet. These vehicles, known as high-speed electric bikes, cannot be ridden on cycle lanes and require approval from the DVLA.

Speed Calculations for Motors

So, how does the electric assistance device work?

Electric bikes achieve a more effortless riding experience through electric assistance devices. These devices come in two types: pedal and throttle. Our iScooter electric bikes use a pedal-assist system.

In this setting, the main power comes from your legs, with relatively less assistance provided by the electric assist, allowing you to rely more on your own power for riding.

However, if you want to experience a more relaxed ride during your ride, or if you face more challenging terrain, such as climbing hills, then choosing a higher assistance level may be more suitable. In this setting, the electric assist provides more power support, allowing you to reach your destination faster and more easily while reducing excessive physical exertion.
